RJ Marine Surveys Ltd was formed by Ray Johnston, a highly qualified Marine Surveyor with wide ranging expertise as a marine loss adjuster, consultant and surveyor.

Our expertise extends from traditional timber vessels, production FRP sailing and motor yachts, steel and aluminium vessels, modern high tech composite racing yachts and large complex sailing cruisers and motor yachts.

We offer pre-purchase condition surveys, insurance surveys, valuation surveys as well as damage surveys for Underwriters.

A major part of our work is as Nominated Surveyors of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) which enables us to conduct MCA Codes of Compliance Examinations for Small Commercial Vessels, as well as Tonnage Measurement Surveys for British Registration.

CMID Inspections or Surveys

We are authorised by the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) to conduct Common Marine Inspections of Small Commercial Workboats known as CMID inspections.

We are also often called upon to provide expert evidence in litigation cases for private individuals as well as insurance companies. With a considerable background within the Police Service we are able to take detailed witness statements and provide expert evidence reports in personal injury claims, as well as liability and damage claims. 

From our head office in St Nicholas at Wade, Kent we operate throughout the entire UK, Europe and beyond. We also have an office in Southern Spain near Malaga and handle many assignments throughout Spain and the Balearic Islands.  

Located close to airports and the Channel Tunnel we can travel throughout Europe, and worldwide at short notice. We have local knowledge of the many marinas in France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. We also have a network of associate surveyors throughout the World.

Ray Johnston our Principal Surveyor is a full surveyor member of the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA), a member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) and the International Association of Marine Investigators (IAMI) and are actively involved with these associations.
